The World of Mahjong

Learn about Mahjong

Mahjong is a strategic game played with tiles, where players draw and discard while using pattern recognition to build combinations and complete a winning hand.

While there are many ways to play, all mahjong styles are built on building patterns and combinations from the tiles.

How to play

Every mahjong game follows the same rhythm: draw, decide, and discard. Players build hands from their tiles, to create a winning sequence through 4 melds and a pair in HK mahjong and a hand that matches the NMJL card in American Mah Jongg.

On each turn, you draw a tile and discard one. Play moves around the table counterclockwise as you work towards a winning hand.

Improve your game

Improving your mahjong game is continuous. First you learn the rules, then you learn to read the table and play defensively. With experience comes the ability to pivot your hand, increase your points, and develop end-game awareness.

There’s always another layer to discover—and another way to get better.
